Football Data Scientist

Department: Football (Soccer) Research & Development

Reports to: Director, Football (Soccer) Research & Development

Status: Full-Time

Location: Blue Crow Sports Group – Madrid Office, SpainBlue Crow Sports Group is hiring a Football Data Scientist to work within our Research & Development department. This role reports directly to our Director of Football R+D and will be based at our office in Madrid, Spain. Working primarily with our partner CD Leganes, the successful candidate will develop statistical analysis and apply a wide range of data science techniques to support decision-making in areas such as scouting and recruitment, player development as well as first team and academy tactical and performance aspects . The Football Data Scientist will play a primarily role designing and implementing algorithms to extract actionable insights from large datasets and communicate results through data visualization and interactive tools to help accelerate our understanding of the game.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Partner with various stakeholders to translate broad football problems into specific analytical projects, perform data modeling and conduct quantitative analysis, communicate results effectively and provide recommendations to impact end-user decisions across various functions (scouting, player development, game preparation, etc.).
  • Develop pipelines for data processing and preparation focusing on improving data quality and integrity for later analysis.
  • Implement appropriate statistical methods across complex and disparate datasets to identify causal relationships, patterns, trends, and anomalies according to different football related data and research questions.
  • Perform frequent code debugging and maintenance work to improve the operational performance of current analytical tools.
  • Work with our engineering team to improve data ingestion processes, model deployment and production and support the publication and testing of new versions of our proprietary web platform.
  • Proactively help formulate research questions, test hypotheses and identify analytical methods to continue advancing our understanding of different Football related areas.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry developments, in particular with regards to Football research and new analytical concepts, to better assess opportunities for improving our current information system.
  • Work closely with our technical and coaching staff to provide support with analytical and research requests.
  • Attend frequent operational meetings with our R&D department.

Education and/or Experience and Skills:

  • Significant experience working with large, complex and diverse datasets. Familiar with common Football data sources and KPIs.
  • Degree in data science, statistics, mathematics, engineering or other related field.
  • Significant programming experience and familiarity with common statistical/mathematical software such as Python and/or R.
  • Knowledge of database querying (SQL, Postgress SQL).
  • Familiarity with common collaboration and version control tools, such as Git and/or GitHub.
  • Experienced in communication strategies, reporting best-practices, and data visualization. Able to translate complex analytical results into easy-to-understand concepts.

Remote Data Scientist

At WayOps we are looking for a Data Scientist profile who wants to continue their professional career as part of a top-level Data & AI team and working on cloud projects with the latest technologies.
