Full Job Description

Gardener volunteers help with a wide range of tasks including planting, weeding and pruning. This role supports the smooth running of hospitals planted communal areas for both staff and patients. This role is best suited to volunteers who are green fingered, understand the changing seasons and have a good understanding of plant identification, care and maintenance. If you have a passion for plants and close to nature this is the role for you.

Essential Information:

If you are interested in more than 1 role, please submit your application on your initial preference(other roles can be discussed at assessment).

Please kindly note, you will be given a 20-minute assessment betweenTuesday 18 October to Wednesday 2 November 2022at the Volunteering office.

TheMandatorytraining for this role will be on one of the following datesMonday 21 November or Monday 28 November 2022.

Assistant Gardener (part-time)

Prince of Wales is a successful, forward thinking Primary School in a diverse multi-cultural area. Our well-resourced school benefits from fantastic green spaces with many themed garden areas, a large playground with fields and has good public transport and road links. We have ample on-site parking. We currently have an Assistant Gardener vacancy to start W/C 10th October 2022:

6 hours per week (1 day per week), 39 weeks per yea

Actual salary Range: £3,222 – £3,280 p.a inc (Scale 3)

We are looking for a reliable and motivated individual to join our site staff team and to take pride in providing a beautifully maintained environment for staff, pupils and visitors alike.

The ideal candidate will have previous experience in grounds development and maintenance, a demonstrable passion for the environment and a keen eye for creating surroundings which are aesthetically pleasing as well as being wildlife-friendly. They will be able to work under their own initiative, whilst also taking direction from our Head Gardener, and effectively work alongside the 2 site managers.

The role will require an element of helping our children to learn about the natural world and encouraging an interest in living harmoniously within it. If this sounds like you then we would love to hear from you!

Birmingham City University is a large and diverse place to study right in the heart of the city and we currently have an exciting opportunity for a gardener to join our dynamic team. The role will suit a person who has a keen interest in horticulture and grounds maintenance.

Working within a small team you will be responsible for maintenance and landscaping of the University external grounds and spaces to provide a welcoming, safe and professional environment for staff, students and visitors to the University.

As a gardener, you would be expected

  • To carry out maintenance and landscaping of all lawn areas, flowers beds and borders, shrubs, woodland, hedges, fences and all external areas of the estate.
  • To demonstrate knowledge and competence in the use of standard horticultural machinery and equipment.
  • To be aware of and, encourage biodiversity within the working environment.
  • To undertake all practical aspects of grounds and garden maintenance, including, planting, pruning, sweeping and collection and disposal of dead animal carcasses.
  • To ensure all tools are used, maintained and stored safely.
  • To use appropriate chemicals safely for the control of weeds, pest and disease.
  • To be responsible for his/her safety while working on university sites, and to comply with all instructions under the University Health and Safety Policy.
  • To assist site staff in responding to situations during adverse weather conditions along with gritting and the clearance of snow and ice from roads and paths.
  • To drive University vehicles in travelling to and from sites.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and also in a team environment
  • Working to daily schedules and prioritising tasks in order of emergency or workload
  • Ability to plan their daily schedule to ensure that there is sufficient time allocation to working in the office to read emails, complete forms, gardening material and complete internal training courses as and when required.
  • Ability to complete forms as part of ensuring all work practices are adhering to safety and compliance with an understanding of the importance and relevance to taking responsibility.
  • Ensure that appropriate training for compliance purposes is adhered to so that it ensures the employee is able to make decisions effectively as a duty of care to themselves or other people e.g. ability to assess equipment is in working order before self-use or the ability to raise an alarm in an emergency
  • NVQ Qualifications in Horticulture or equivalent required
  • Sports Turf experience including plant use required
  • Pa1 and Pa6 preferable
  • Require basic PC skill training in order to read emails from the business and line manager
  • Ability to make decisions where Health & Safety is paramount for the safety of people
  • Microsoft Office skills is desirable for completing forms, templates, emails on the University IT systems
