Our Plumbers complete assigned work orders and maintain plumbing equipment on Xanterra South Rim property.

Wage: $17.60 an hour

  • Complete all plumbing work orders in a timely, thorough and cost effective manner.
  • Adhere to all applicable building codes in the repair, installation or construction of plumbing.
  • Prioritize work orders keeping in mind room occupancy, weather and National Park Service requirements.
  • Provide information on time frame to complete work orders, and assist in cost estimating the job.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  • Adhere to all safety, risk management and environmental policies regarding plumbing projects.
  • Communicate with affected departments/areas as to water shut off/turn on, and other factors that may interrupt guest or employee services.
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment while performing tasks.
  • Work in conjunction with National Park Service Maintenance on designated projects.
  • Assist with the training and development of lower Plumber grades.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Minimum four-years experience as a commercial grade Plumber.
  • Ability to install water, drainage and sewer piping system.
  • Ability to plumb commercial and residential equipment.
  • Ability to repair and replace water circulating pumps.
  • Ability to identify, measure, thread and join the various pipes used in plumbing.
  • Ability to sweat copper and have familiarity with oxygen and acetylene torch.
  • Ability to install and repair all plumbing fixtures, toilets, sinks and faucet seats, washers and stems.
  • Ability to work on steam lines and traps.
  • Ability to read plumbing, mechanical and building blueprints.
  • Familiarity with LP (propane) and natural gas.
  • Ability to use all power and hand snakes on sewage lines.
  • Ability to read and comprehend all appropriate plumbing codes.
  • Ability to give an accurate estimate of time and material needed for a given project.
  • Ability to install, service and maintain evaporative coolers.
  • Possess or obtain a valid Arizona Driver’s License within 90 days of start date and comply with the Xanterra South Rim Company Vehicle Policy.
  • Possess physical ability to perform the tasks including entering confined spaces, ascending/descending ladders and possibly trenches, and lifting up to fifty pounds.

This is a ACE/AFSCME, Local 2250 Position – Pay Table 200 – Grade 16

Hourly Range: $22.35 – $44.63

Detailed Description


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Installs, inspects and repairs hot and cold water lines, oil, steam or gas pipes and makes all necessary connections;
  • Installs and services water and sewer utility piping;
  • Installs and repairs fixtures such as lavatory facilities, drinking fountains, sprinkler systems and various kitchen equipment;
  • Repairs heating lines, radiators, valve traps, heating and cooling coils, circulating pumps, boilers and hot water heaters;
  • Cuts, bends and threads metal and plastic pipes and fittings;
  • Assists workmen of related trades in various construction/renovation work;
  • Maintains plumbing tools and equipment, requisitions materials as needed, and operates shop vehicles and equipment;
  • Oversees the work of Apprentices and Trades Helpers;
  • Contributes to the evaluation process of employees; including progressive discipline; and
  • Performs related duties as required.

  • Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology, codes and safety precautions of the trades;
  • Ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions;
  • Ability to estimate time, and materials needed;
  • Ability to lay out work when called upon;
  • Must have knowledge of technology (computer and/or mobile device) to enter materials, labor hours, status and details of the work done into the online work order management system;
  • Must be in good physical condition;
  • Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations while operating a Board of Education vehicle; and
  • Deemed as essential personnel; and may be required to work day, night or weekend hours to meet the operational needs of the department.


Various experiences as a journeyman plumber and completion of a recognized apprenticeship in this work and completion of high school program; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.


Journeyman Plumbing Certificate and Back Flow Prevention Card required.
