About 300 people made a slow march this past Sunday in Cornudella de Montsant, in the Priorat, to protest the fatal run-down of an Andorran resident cyclist, last weekend, by a drunk driver who fled.

The victim is Marc Pimienta, a 61-year-old resident of Andorra and former national ski mountain coach between 2015 and 2019, very close to Cambrils, where he enjoyed cycling.

The tribute, organized by the town’s cycling club, reached the point on the C-242 where he died, at kilometer 44.4, and once there was a minute of silence and a bouquet of flowers was laid at his feet of a white bicycle that the cyclist remembers, the first hit this year.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested by the Mossos, he is in provisional prison, with an open case for reckless homicide, failure to render assistance and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The man driving an all-terrain vehicle, brand Toyota, made an advance in a section with a continuous line and ran into the victim, who died on the spot due to the violence of the frontal collision, as indicated by the Service Catalan Traffic.

The cyclist hit the windshield and the impact was so strong that the bike was embedded under the vehicle. The victim was also riding with another cyclist, who was uninjured in the accident.

At the rally, in which there was a strong Andorran representation, they asked for quick trials and harsher penalties for offenders on the road. From the Catalan Cycling Federation, they add that all road users would benefit from faster trials for these serious infringements.
